Why Pomeranians Bite
Why Pomeranians Bite
There are many reasons why a Pomeranian will bite. It is important to first
figure out if your Pomeranian is acting crazy and biting because of a medial
issue or if the answer lies somewhere else. A Pomeranian will bite if he or she
is in pain or sick. Your Pomeranian may look perfectly healthy; however your
dog may be suffering inside and does not want anyone to touch them. They may
feel they need to guard the area they rest in when they are sick and bite people
who approach them.
If your Pomeranian is in perfect health, there are other reasons why he may
bite. The main reason for a puppy to bite is teething, this can be a difficult
and frustrating time for you. However, the same advice given for babies works
for puppies. Babies need something to chew on when teething. Your Pomeranian
needs something to chew on also, and not your shoes! Give your Pomeranian many
different options of toys. And it is great if you can put some of the toys in
the freezer to make them cold when he bites on them. If you don't mind wiping
up the water, you can give you dog an ice cube. If given to him on a linoleum
floor you dog will have a blast chasing around the sliding ice and this will
help a lot in regard to biting because of teething.
The instinct to protect may be one of the causes of why Pomeranians bite. Even
though a Pomeranian is a very small dog, he still has the same instincts to
protect. Your Pomeranian will bite to protect her puppies, this is completely
normal behavior. A mother Pomeranian will bite your hand in a second if she
feels you are a threat to her pup.
A Pomeranian will also bite if he is protecting his territory, another normal
dog instinct. A dog will bite to protect what they consider their own personal
space. This can be fixed by proper training. Your Pomeranian may also bite
because of fear, again this is something that can be fixed with the proper
Pomeranian training. Of course, training to stop a Pomeranian from biting will
be different than the training of other types of dogs. A toy dog such as the
Pomeranian can not be trained in the same way as a Doberman. One way is to put
your Pomeranian on his or her back when they bite, this puts them in a
submissive position and shows them who is boss. You should choose one word to
say when doing so, such as "no". Yelling a sentence will do you no good, dogs
only pay attention to the first syllable that a human says.
Some Tips to Stop Biting
Your Pomeranian will not stop biting unless you show him that it is wrong to
bite. There are many ways to do this, however none entail hitting your dog
or doing anything that causes pain or discomfort. If you do so, all you will be
doing is teaching and training your dog to be afraid of you. You will gain
nothing and miss out on so much: that wonderful bond and relationship between
human and canine.
Allowing your Pomeranian to keep biting you or others will bring you nothing and
you will miss out on having a peaceful happy dog. No matter what you have
heard, it is not true that small toys dogs such as the Pomeranian are "snappy".
This is not part of their instinct behavior. The Pom breed began in cold
climate and they were originally sled-pulling dogs who's average size was 20
pounds! Over time, they have become smaller dogs, but this did not make them
biters.
A small dog does not need to live up to its infamous reputation of being a
snappy dog. A Pomeranian can be cute and friendly and just as wonderfully
trained as any other type of breed. The key is the word train. Just as a child
needs to be shown how to do things and a toddler needs to be shown what is
correct behavior and what is not, your Pomeranian needs to be shown what
is correct behavior and what is not acceptable. It is your job to show your dog
this. Once done, the training will last forever, and both owner and canine will
be happy. You do not need to stop your life and devote every second to proper
Pomeranian training, you simply need to take a reasonable amount of time to
teach your Pomeranian to stop biting.
He will continue his biting behavior until he is trained to stop. It is up to
you to take the time to train your Pomeranian; however when all seems lost and
you have just about given up all hope, remember that it will be worth it in the
end. If you do nothing, four months from now your Pomeranian will still bite.
If you begin proper Pomeranian training, four months from now you will have a
loving, cute, cuddly ball of fur who will not bite you. Which do you chose?
