Grooming Tips for at Home
Pomeranian grooming has two basic aspects. You will
need to keep good care of his or her coat of fur and
you also must pay attention to their nails. The
fur will matt if not groomed correctly and nails
will keep growing until they are ingrown; at that
point not only will your dog be in pain and
suffering but may even need surgery to fix this
issue.
Pomeranian puppies are famous for their fur and they
do require some extra grooming. Brushing your dog
is very important; this will prevent the matting.
It is best to brush when the fur is wet. So, this
of course means you must bathe your Pomeranian puppy
. You should bathe him or her at least one time a
week, more they are outside a lot. The type of dog
shampoo you use is very important. Cheap dog
shampoos can dry out the fur and even cause moderate
to severe itching. If your dog is itching, you will
want to change his shampoo as one step. There are
other reasons for itching, such as other allergies
your Pomeranian may have.
If your dog needs a brushing and just had a bath the
day before, you can simply wet their fur with warm
water; do so with a soft wash cloth and with smooth
slow motions so they are not afraid. To properly
brush and actually accomplish the goal of keeping
matted hair away and maintaining a fluffy coat you
must use the proper brush.
A standard one is not sufficient; Pomeranians are
small, fragile breeds and you need a special brush.
The brush should have bristles that are wide spaced
to allow easier brushing. You can find these at
almost any reputable online store such as Animal
Den or other. Simply search for "small brushes for
toy dogs". Purchasing a brush at a local store is
not recommended because not only will it be over
priced, most pet stores are not experts in such
matters.
While brushing, you may find mattes of hair.
Removing them properly is vital. Make sure your
Pomeranian is relaxed, have someone gently
hold her to help, line up a grooming tool carefully
and always be aware she may jump when you do not
expect it. You most certainly need to use a dog
grooming tool to reduce the odds of cutting the
dog's skin. You may trim any hair you wish; you may
especially want to trim around the dog's tummy; be
careful of course. Trim around the anus to keep your
Pomeranian clean and tidy also.
The hair all around the dog's main body should
remain long. Never, we repeat never, shave or allow
your Pomeranian to be shaved. Proper shampoos and
conditioners made especially for long haired dogs
will be needed to keep that perfect fluffy look.
Take a bit of time to search around for these
products, as the few moments you take to select a
good dog shampoo and dog conditioner is well worth
it. Supplements are important to keep your dog's
fur healthy, as well.
Although it may seem as if your Pomeranian has one
coat of hair, she has two. Try to lift the long
layer of the top coat so that you can brush the
bottom layer. Think of it as a person with layered
hair; you can't see a huge difference in layers
unless you look closely.
Nail trimming must be done every three months with
no exceptions. If you have never trimmed a dog's
nails before, when you are searching for a proper
nail trimming tool, make sure to read how each one
works. A lot of Pomeranian owners choose to have a
dog groomer take care of the nails.
