Bathing Your Maltese

Since this breed is the kind of dog breeds that have long, silky hair, you may need to bathe your Maltese ,  puppies more often than other breeds that have short coats of hair. Bathing your Maltese puppy, Maltese puppies should be likened to bathing a baby. Care should be taken that no water gets into your dog's ears. Water in the ears can be a source of ear infections for your dog. Since these dogs have rather long coats, even if you do decide to give it a puppy cut to help keep their hair at a more manageable length, you will need to use a conditioner on the coat of hair to help keep it supple and easy to manage after shampooing. You will need to bathe your Maltese puppy, Maltese puppies in warm water and you may want to use a dog shampoo that is gentle on your dog's eyes or a "no-more-tears" formulated shampoo. If you want your dog's fur to shine brilliantly, there are also shampoos that will help you achieve this, although extra care may be needed when using since these shampoo types are not eye friendly.

Combing and Brushing

Just like people with long hair, the Maltese puppy, Maltese puppies needs to be combed at least once a day to get rid of tangles and to make their coat look neat and attractive. You will need to use a brush or a comb that will not hurt the skin underneath the hair and you will need to get your Maltese puppy, Maltese puppies used to this daily grooming regimen from the day you bring them home. The combing and brushing of your dog's coat can be done easily with the help of hair softening and grooming materials like a spray-on conditioner or a little coat oil. These two grooming liquids can help keep the dog's hair shiny and mess free as well as easier to comb.

Keeping your Maltese puppy, Maltese puppies combed or brushed and properly groomed without tangles in his coat not only keeps him looking nice and neat, it also keeps the possibility of parasites infesting his long mane of hair since it is kept clean and devoid of any tangles that can be the breeding places of such pests. You should comb your Maltese puppy, Maltese puppies in the usual downward motion that is typical of combing a person's hair. Considerations should be made that the comb or the brush does not scratch the dog's skin or pull at the hairs and causing the dog pain or excessive loss of hair due to brisk brushing or combing.

A Maltese puppy, Maltese is very well known and recognizable due to its long mane of white hair. This hair is one of the features that make the Maltese puppy, Maltese puppies a very popular toy and show dog, and styling it has become a hobby of sorts for some Maltese puppy, Maltese puppies owners. One problem that Maltese puppy, Maltese puppies owners may have is the shedding of their pet's hair. Although this rarely happens since these dogs are not known to be big hair shedders and tend to shed hair at a rather low rate as compared to other long haired breeds, there are instances when a  puppy, Maltese puppies can shed more than its fair share of coat. To help ensure that this does not happen, you need to follow a few simple Maltese puppy, Maltese puppies hair care guidelines.

On Bathing

The Maltese puppy, Maltese puppies has an impeccable white coat of hair and this hair can grow to as long as 12 inches if left to grow without cutting. The care and maintenance of this breed can be somewhat tedious since they do have a lot of hair that may get scraggly, matted or dirty due to its pristine white color. A little dirt on your dog should not prompt you to take out the shampoo and towels immediately. As much as possible, you should bathe your dogs once a month, twice at the most to keep the natural oils on their coats intact. Over bathing your Maltese puppy, Maltese puppies can result in the drying of the skin underneath the hair which can then result in shedding or an unhealthy dog.

You should also only use a shampoo that is meant for dogs and not use detergents, human shampoo or even baby shampoo - although baby shampoo can be substituted once in a while should you find yourself out of the regular shampoo your dog uses. Using a conditioner on the hair of your Maltese puppy, Maltese puppies also helps keep shedding at bay since the conditioner softens the hair and makes it easier to comb through.

Styling and Trimming

For those that find the long hair of the Maltese puppy, Maltese puppies too time consuming or too taxing a thing to take care of, you can actually have it cut short in a puppy cut style that is around 1 to 2 inches in length all over, making the full grown Maltese puppy, Maltese puppies resemble a puppy. This kind of a trim can also help prevent excessive shedding since you do not need to comb long strands of hair that have a tendency to get caught in the comb or brush. You should also try and use styling agents for your Maltese puppy, Maltese puppies dogs that are gentle on them and won't cause the hair to fall out.

Diet and Stress

As with other hairy creatures, diet and stress have a bearing on the shedding of hair. When your Maltese puppy, Maltese puppies seems to be shedding more than the usual amount of hair, it may be stressed out, lacks exercise or has a poor diet that does not give it the proper nutrients it needs to help keep his hair intact. You may need to check ou.

Is you Maltese Dog Show Material?

People get a Maltese puppy for a pet for so many different reasons. Getting a Maltese puppy simply as a pet for your home is one of the easiest and most common reasons people have for getting this breed of dog; however there are people who purchase or adopt a Maltese puppy for reasons that go beyond simple companionship. There are dog owners out there who take pride in showing off their Maltese puppy dogs and their long glossy coats of hair. The dogs that are seen competing in dog shows are often those dogs that are well disciplined and impeccably groomed. If you have a Maltese puppy that you think can do well in the world of dog shows, you should try to determine whether or not he or she is ready or fit for it.

Temperament

A Maltese puppy can look exactly like another Maltese puppy next to it and if you are basing your plans of taking your dog to join a dog show on looks alone, you need to re-assess your plans. Most of the dogs you see in dog shows have to undergo a certain amount of training. For these dogs to absorb such detailed instructions, they have to have a certain disposition that is ideal for your dog show aspirations.

Maltese puppy that are blue-ribbon material often have a balanced temperament that allows their owners and trainers to get their dogs to stand still when required, to preen when asked to and to follow every directive that is thrown their way. Of course, these dogs possess a rather high level of intelligence and absorbing such training commands can be pretty easy for them. The difference in whether or not a Maltese puppy can be dog show material lies in the dog's attitude. If a Maltese puppy can easily adjust to his obedience training without the owner and trainer having to pull out all the stops to get him to do so, there is a huge chance that your Maltese puppy can become ready for a dog show in no time.

Grooming and Beauty

Of course, all these dogs look very alike. They are, after all, dogs of the same breed. What sets your Maltese puppy apart from the rest of the other dogs that are like him is how you groom and beautify him. There are a lot of factors that judges consider when choosing a dog to take home the blue ribbon at these events, and knowing which parts of a dog's appearance they take note of when scoring a dog show can help you prepare your Maltese puppy for such scrutiny. This will be no easy feat since you will need to keep your pet impeccably groomed and clean in all aspects and you will need to maximize your dog's inherent beauty with the kind of grooming you give it. Glossy coat of hair, evenly trimmed, trimmed nails, clean eye area and even the use of the right hair accessory on your Maltese puppy can make or break your dog's chances at these dog competitions

Supplies and Products

There are many Maltese Puppy shampoos and conditioners on the market that are specially designed with a Maltese Puppy's hair and skin pH taken into consideration. These products are typically more expensive than the pet store brand Maltese Puppy shampoo and conditioner, but may be the difference between a dull coat and a shiny and healthy looking coat for some breeds. If you know that the breed you own is prone to skin allergies, hot spots, rashes or other irritations or skin conditions it is a wise idea to go with the specialty, non-allergic type products. Shampoos and conditioners for Maltese Puppies with oatmeal and aloe ingredients may be gentler and less problematic. In addition to shampoos and conditioners a good Maltese Puppy hair detangler and a finishing leave in condition may also be beneficial to have on hand.

Before getting the Maltese Puppy into the tub or sink or Maltese Puppy bath, be sure to have everything you need. A hand held shower wand is a wonderful option, but a plastic pitcher can be used as well. Have the shampoo, conditioner, water, buckets, towels and a dry cloth on hand just in case. In addition a non-slip or skid mat in the bottom of the tub or sink will help make the Maltese Puppy feel more secure and prevent any possibility of a slip and an injury. Most Maltese Puppy baths will already have a texturized bottom for easy traction.

Strategies and techniques

Once all your supplies are ready and within easy reach, the next step is to bring the Maltese Puppy. Depending on the breed of Maltese Puppy you own some breeders recommend grooming and detangling before bathing and some recommend after. If you are not sure, call a breeder and ask. Most Maltese Puppies are OK with water, as long as it is not poured over their heads. Start by having the Maltese Puppy stand or sit in the tub or sink and let them become calm in the bath. Holding the Maltese Puppy firmly by the collar, start to pour warm but not hot water over the Maltese Puppy, ideally using the shower wand. Once the Maltese Puppy is wet all over, apply some shampoo to your hands, work up and lather, then pull through the coat using your fingers from the neck to the hips, only moving your hands in the direction of hair growth. NEVER rub or use circular motions to work the shampoo into the Maltese Puppies hair if you have a double coated breed or a medium or long haired breed, it will just make a huge mat of hair. Also, don't put any water near the face or ears, this can be washed with a cloth later on.

After the shampoo has been worked through the hair from the neck to the rump, use the wand and completely rinse any and all soap residue. Use your hand to gentle and carefully push the hair back and away from the skin and ensure that every last bit of soap is off the hair, even down by the skin. This is absolutely critical to avoid skin irritations. Once the Maltese Puppy is completely rinsed, apply the conditioner in the same fashion, never rubbing, only stroking it through the hair in the direction of growth. Completely rinse all conditioner out of the hair and check to make sure there is no left over residue.

At this time you can use a damp cloth with clean, warm water to gently wash the face and ears. Never put water into the ears or pour water over the Maltese Puppy's head. Don't use soap around the eyes or ears, just warm, clear water. Typically the hair on the face is very short in most breeds and won't need much attention. Breeds with a beard or moustache or long topknot may need additional attention on a daily basis to keep this longer hair clean.

Always watch your Maltese Puppy for signs of anxiety and stress. Speak reassuringly and be sure to have a few treats on hand to keep the Maltese Puppy attentive in the process. When getting the Maltese Puppy out of the tub or bath be sure to give the command and help the Maltese  so he or she doesn't slip and possibly get injured. Avoid just allowing the Maltese Puppy to jump out on his or her own.

Dog Nail Care:

Taking good care of your Maltese  nails and feet is an important step in assuring overall good health of your Maltese Puppy. A Maltese  nails that are too long can cause lameness and even an unwillingness to move, painful walking or moving, plus can also be dangerous to humans and other animals, not to mention flooring and furniture. Nails that are trimmed too short will also be extremely painful for the Maltese Puppy and may result in the same type of Maltese Puppy behaviors as found in situations where the nails are too long.

Most Maltese' nails do not grow as fast as human nails, but each Maltese Puppy will have their own nail growth rate. It is often very dependent on the type of food that the Maltese Puppy is eating as well as the areas that the Puppy naturally exercises. If your Maltese Puppy has lots of time walking on hard, abrasive surfaces such as cement sidewalks or floors, gravel areas or hard, packed ground he or she may keep their nails naturally filed or worn down just through their movement. Maltese Puppies that are typically walking and playing on soft surfaces such as lawns and grass, carpet or even linoleum flooring will need to have their nails trimmed as there is just no natural wear. Typically most Maltese will need their nails trimmed or filed every three to five weeks, with some being slightly longer between sessions.

Nail Clippers

There are three main types of nail clipping devices for Maltese . These include the guillotine type trimmers, the slotted scissor type and nail files. In addition a good coagulant powder to stop any bleeding should you accidentally cut into the quick is a good idea.

Guillotine type nail clippers look very similar in design to a one-hole paper punch. These clippers are available at pet stores and groomers in almost every area. The end is a loop or circle into which the nail is placed. When the handle is squeezed a sliding blade moves down across the nail, clipping it in a straight, horizontal line if the trimmer is held in the correct position. The benefit of these types of trimmers is that they are strong, durable and cut cleanly and quickly when operated correctly. It is very important to get a good quality guillotine style clipper with a sharp blade. A dull blade will result in splinters and a painful procedure for the Maltese Puppy, something you should avoid at all costs. Guillotine style clippers come in different sizes for different sizes of Maltese Puppies. Use the right size for your Maltese Puppy to avoid only cutting through part of the nail or having the nail too loose in the slot.

Slotted scissors are typically only recommended for smaller breeds of  Puppies with thinner, smaller nails. Unlike the guillotine style that uses a spring mechanism to increase the force of the clipper, scissor clippers require the person to provide all the strength in getting through the nail. In most medium to giant sized breeds the average person will not have the hand strength to evenly and quickly clip through a hard nail. The slotted scissors have a notch on the bottom blade that the end of the nail rests in and the scissor blades extend past this to provide the cutting action.

Nail files are needed to gently file any rough edges left by clipping or to clean up the nails if any splinters occur if the nails are dry or brittle. In addition files can be used for some Maltese that really fight the clippers or scissors, it will just be important to file routinely and not allow the nails to get too long.

How To Clip A Nail

If you look closely at the Maltese nails you can see that they are very similar to human nails with a dead, hard end and a tender center. The tender center is known as the quick, just like the cuticle in humans, and contains nerves and blood vessels. In Maltese Puppies with white nails the quick appears as a pinkish center part in the nail extending from the pad to about midway down the nail. It is absolutely essential to never cut into that quick. If you do it will bleed profusely and will be very painful for the Maltese Puppy. In black nailed Maltese Puppies the quick is not visible, but the underside of the nail will have a groove that is deepest at the tip and gradually tapers out as you move up the nail. Where the groove changes to a shallower indent is typically where the quick ends. Staying well down the nail on Maltese Puppies with black nails is highly recommended to avoid clipping into the quick.

The key to clipping your Maltese Puppy's nails successfully is to do it calmly and quickly. Start with the Maltese Puppy seated and calm, pick up one paw and place your thumb on the top of the paw and one or two fingers supporting the bottom of the pads. Place the nail clipper at a 45-degree angle to the curve of the nail so when the paw is placed on the ground the trimmed edge will be flat and level with the ground. Check to ensure that you are well below the quick and then simply squeeze. Usually the Maltese Puppy will pull back at the sound of the clippers so have a quick treat ready. Repeat the process. For most Maltese Puppies nail clipping is a two-person job, one to hold the Maltese Puppy and provide reassurance and one to actually do the clipping. For some Maltese Puppies they are fine with the front feet, but don't like the back feet to be touched.

If you do accidentally cut into the quick apply a styptic powder or coagulant that is available in all pet stores. Simply dip the nail into the powder and within seconds the bleeding will stop. If, by chance, the bleeding is profuse or doesn't stop, take the Maltese Puppy to the vet.

Clipping nails isn't difficult, but if you are very nervous you wish to leave this chore up to a groomer or your vet. Typically a groomer will trim nails during the regular grooming routine anyway.

Weird Facts

Very few people do not succumb to the allure of the  puppies. This toy dog breed is so adorable that the Maltese is often presented in the Aristocratic form. Professional dog groomers can perform expensive services for the Maltese like bathing, brushing, coat trimming, pedicure and hair styling.

The Maltese dog breed is one of the most fancy of all show puppies and caring for it is exhaustive work. The coat alone needs daily grooming and bathing at least twice a week. Also, their diet has to be very specific so as to maintain the sheen and shine of the coat. You must have passion when you want to adopt a Maltese dog into your life.

Here is a list of a few interesting facts about this adorable dog breed:

Maltese are fearless.

Charles Darwin himself theorized that the Maltese originated as a solid breed in 6000 B.C.

Despite their size, Maltese puppies are excellent jumpers. They have great hindquarter muscles that helps propel them to at least a full body-length into the air.

All  puppies are white, with silky coats which are never shed. Any variation or stain in color is considered "undesirable."

A Maltese is also a hypoallergenic dog - which is the same with some breeds like the Bischon Frise and the Poodle. It means that they are less likely to cause you dog allergy.

They may look cuddly and cute, but Maltese puppies are intolerant of children or other animals. In fact, aside from their human companions some Maltese puppies are even openly hostile to other humans.

Josephine Bonaparte, Marie Antoinette, Mary Queen of Scots, Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria are all great ladies who also share one common denominator: all of them had a pet Maltese at some point of their lives.

Who is the richest Maltese in the world? Trouble is! In August 20, 2007, Leona Helmsley, a billionaire New York City Hotel Operator and Real Estate Investor, bequeathed $12 million to her pet Maltese named Trouble at the time of her death.

"Ye Ancient Dogge of Malta," is one of the different names that the Maltese had carried over a span of many centuries. Other names include: Bichon, Comforter Dog, Maltese Lion Dog, Maltese Terrier, Melitaie Dog, Roman Ladies' Dog, Shock Dog, and the Spaniel Gentle. Today, everyone just calls it the Maltese: that darn cute little dog with the long flowing white hair.

Most Maltese puppies now live the "Aristocratic" life: they live in luxury and often stay indoors. This however, can affect their health to a detrimental degree. Like all puppies,
